Nadezhda S. - a disabled child born 1999, joined our orphanage 2 months ago. Her clinical diagnoses are as follows:

Major: Metatropic dwarfism, rickets-like disease, oxalouria, dismetabolic nephropathy, urinary tract infections, gall-bladder dysfunction, dyscholia, pancreatitis, medium hypermetropia OU (oculus uterque).

Secondary: Early cerebral insufficiency resulting in cognitive abnormalities, ambyopia, convergent alternating strabismus.

It seems that this child has been so unlucky as to have all imaginable illnesses and misfortunes fall upon her. Nadyushka (a nick name for Nadezhda) is turning 8 this year, but she resembles a 2-year old when it comes to height. Her height is 90cm, or about 36 inches. Her parents and relatives have abandoned her. The girl is very smart and bright. When I was picking her up from the hospital, I was afraid that other kids were going to bully and ostracize her, but I was wrong. Everybody likes her and all children and adults help her out. A little while ago we contacted the appropriate specialists to find out if there are ways to help her. Doctors at Vladivostok Medical Center have recommended surgery. This surgery has extension of lower extremities as its ultimate goal. After the surgery an “Elizarov's" device is put in to stretch out the legs over a period of time. Needless to say, this is a very painful and long procedure, but in the long run it will improve the quality of life for this girl. I am also concerned about her schooling. Right now she lives with our kindergarten group. She is older then anybody there but she looks as if she was the youngest. After the surgery, she will have to be home schooled, and I realize that she is not going to get any help from anybody, but us. Of course, the surgery itself and rehabilitation afterwards will require a lot of resources – emotional, physical, and financial. My staff and I are going to take the emotional and physical responsibility, but I am asking for your financial support. Preliminary tests and the surgery itself are scheduled for 15th of May to 10th of June, 2007. Nadezhda will be in-patient at the hospital for 20-25 days. It will be necessary to bring her there and pick her back up. Considering her condition, using public transportation will be impossible, so I will drive her over there and pick her up in my car. - Director Yuri Bozhko

Thank you to Yuliya Smyk...
