Water Heaters for
Vladivostok Orphanage #1 Cost: $1,900 Status: Completed on 07/15/2005. Thanks for kind donations by Lee Santilli
Project Description Correctional orphanage of Vladivostok city is located at the address: Krasnogo Znameni Ave. , #92. It utilizes city's worn out communal infrastructure. Due to this fact, it is subject to the periodic cold and hot water shutdowns, along with the rest of the residential city districts. The problem of cold water shutdowns is solved relatively fast by truck delivery of the water and by filling with water every available vessel in the orphanage. However, the problem with hot water supply is much more serious. During the entire year, there are periodic shutdowns. Not counting those, in the spring-summer season the shutdowns can last up to 3-4 months. We are forced to fill a bath tub in the laundry room with water, then heat the water with portable electric heaters to wash children. This setting, despite all the precautions, is prone to many kinds of potential trouble. Daily hygienic needs are satisfied with boiling water in teapots. In the morning, children have to wash their hands in cold water. This year, during the cold spring (and according to meteorological prognosis a cold summer) the water is icy cold. Project Details The aim of the project is to create normal domestic conditions for the orphans during the hygienic and sanitary measures, for the sake of their life and health safety. Hot water heater with 450 liters capacity is needed for continuous supply of the children's home with hot water. The boiler should be installed in the basement because of the location of the cold water supply and also for the safety reasons. However, the boiler of this capacity can not be fit into the basement, because of the height restrictions. There are no horizontal boilers. We have contacted several companies and one of them has suggested the following: install three 150 liter boilers and connected them together. These are Tessy boilers, made in Bulgaria . The boilers are made from stainless steel, 8Kg pressure, energy efficient with minimal power consumption and carry 8 years warranty. The only other option is to install in each room 50-100 liter heating tanks. However this option is very dangerous. In my experience, an installed tank had exploded because of the oversight from an orphanage-worker. Thank God, there were no casualties. All other boilers on market in the city of Vladivostok carry much lesser warrantees, no longer than 1-2 years. Project Update The firm that has submitted the original proposal turned out to be a total fraud. Orphanage did not pay them, and hired another firm to do the work. The actual working solution included installation of five 50 liter and five 100 liter boilers. It turned out quite a bit more expensive, but the orphanage did not give up! Orphanage was able to convince different local organizations to donate all five smaller and one bigger boiler. Then the orphanage staff has raised additional $100 of their personal funds to cover extra cost and completed the project successfully.
