Torez Internat is located on the outskirts of the city of Torez in a very poor, remote area of Ukraine. It was started by Leonid Nikolaevich, the current Director, in 1998 because there were so many abandoned children in the town and many extremely poor families who needed help. Because there was no other building available, he created the orphanage in several rooms of the local medical clinic. Now it is home to approximately 70 children between the ages of 2-18. In spite of many financial problems facing the institution, the Director has been able to create a comfortable place for the children. There are 52 people on staff which helps them to take good care of the children.

In addition to providing a safe place to live, Torez Internat also helps the children learn valuable vocational skills. The children regularly attend a class that teaches them to work with wood and iron, and such skills as tayloring.
