The shelter (The Centre) is far from all cities and towns, it situated in the town of Sychevka, Smolensk region, which is 234 km from Smolensk and 237 km from Moscow. The Centre is situated in the building of a former kindergarten. It was built in 1983. The Centre “Druzba” was organized for children from families with serious difficulties (alcoholic parents, children of parents deprived of the parental rights, children abandoned by their parents, orphans, etc.). Depending on the time there are from 10 to 30 children in the Centre. Their age varies from 3 to 15 years old. Our Centre is a link between family and social institutions. In theory children should stay in the Centre not more than half a year, but in practice they stay here for years. After that they go to a boarding school, orphanage or other institutions. Sometimes it happens that parents take their children back to the family, but very often they return the child again.

There is a daily drop-in where children spend all day and go home only at night. There are 15-25 children in this group. All of them are from the families which have some financial or other difficulties. Their parents can put in an application and their children will be able to live in the Centre. Our Centre becomes a family for children for some period of time. We do our best to take care of the kids, make their life in the Centre convenient and provide them with warmth and care. But the money from our Government isn’t enough to provide children with everything necessary (there was a period when we had to ask people for food just to feed children). - Natalya Vladimirovna Babina (Director)
