Vladivostok Orphanage #1 for Children with Physical or Mental DeficienciesDirectort: Larisa Ivanovna ZavyalovaAddress: Specialnaya Korrekcionnaya Shkola-Internat #1, 92 Prospekt Krasnogo Znameni, Vladivostok, 690014, Russia Phone: (+7) 4232.261.328 This state orphanage in Vladivostok is taking care of 60 children ages 3 to 12 all with physical or mental deficiencies. The Vladivostok Children's Rehabilitation Home was established in 1944 for children who lost their parents in World War II. During the difficult transitional period that Russia has undergone in the last ten years, which caused the marked deterioration in quality of life for many Russians, the Home transitioned from being just an orphanage to catering to kids requiring social and physical rehabilitation. Out of Home's present 55 occupants, only 4 are true orphans, whose parents have passed away. The rest are socially orphaned since their parents either lost parental rights or chose to leave their child upon giving birth or in the street. These children were often abused before even coming out of the womb, and after birth, were often neglected in homes of drug addicts and alcoholics. No wonder there are so many disorders that plague these children throughout their life. The list below will give you an idea of what our residents suffer from: In addition, each resident also suffers from multiple diseases. For example, Dennis Borovsky, an 11 year old boy, who is a third child from the fifth pregnancy, was born to a 22 year old mother, who regularly drinks, smokes and uses drugs. He was born at 35 weeks diagnosed with inner-womb pneumonia. His mother initially took him home, but than abandoned him without no food or medical care. Social services reclaimed the baby, who initially went into a state orphanage, and then came to us. Dennis comes with a whole range of medical problems - nervous system, posture, liver, digestive organs, eyesight and flatfeet - all of them from birth. Most kids have a similar list of maladies.
