"Child Protection" Regional Public Charitable Foundation
The Foundation works with neglected, homeless children and children in a socially dangerous situation in St. Petersburg. Its goal is to give social protection to orphaned and homeless children facilitating their integration into society. The Foundation has 9 founders and 25 employees. All employees are specialists, many having over 10 years experience in working with street children. The St. Petersburg Association for the Protection of Children was initiated
by the National Bible Society of Finland in May 1995 and registered in 1996.
It was reformed in November 1999 into "Child Protection" Regional
Public Charitable Foundation. Outreach Services The purpose of the Outreach Services is to establish initial contact with children on the streets and direct them to the appropriate unit of the Foundation or other social protection organization. During raids that are carried out twice a week, social workers feed the children, provide necessary medical aid, distribute leaflets with useful information and addresses of different organizations. The social workers talk to the kids, clarify the reason why a particular child is on the street and with child's consent forward them to an appropriate place. Nadezhda Homeless Children Shelter The "Nadezhda" (Hope) social shelter for boys provides a home for twelve children ages 6 to 18. Living conditions in the shelter are designed to create a family atmosphere. The boys study in general educational, correctional, and vocational schools. The shelter has a ping-pong room and some other athletic equipment. Shelter's staff include a psychologist and an artist. Day Activities Center The Day Center is visited by children from crisis families and street children. Here they receive social, psychological and medical aid. The Day Center also provides food, clothing and education. Orthodox spiritual and moral values are introduced and taught to the children. The Day Center organizes leisure-time activities such as games, outdoors activities, excursions, and visits to exhibitions and theatres. In the summer the center conducts out of town visits to churches, monasteries, camping trips and even archaeological expeditions. The center also works with the families to help them re-establish a contact with each other so that the child can return to the family. If unsuccessful, the child may be assigned to a shelter. Orphan Housing Housing for 15 young adults was opened recently in a dormitory building. It was established for homeless teenagers and graduates of state orphanages, shelters and children's homes above the age of sixteen. Housing is provided for these young adults until they receive their own living quarters from the state. While living at the shelter they acquire social skills necessary for independent living: cooking, cleaning, making repairs, handling money, home remodeling, making furniture, etc. Crisis Apartment The Crisis Apartment provides temporary refuge (up to two weeks) for homeless children while waiting for permanent placement. Education Centers for Families in Difficult Living Situation The Education Centers strive to reunite families. Social, psychological and material aid is currently provided to 36 families for up to 6 months. Financial support Thank you letter Original in Russian At a meeting in May of 2003, a partnership was formed between regional public charitable foundation "Child Protection" and Ascent Russian Orphan Aid Foundation. Ascent foundation has started a campaign to raise funds to support programs at "Child Protection" foundation. The president of Ascent foundation, Kirill Bogouslavski, has personally visited all divisions of "Child Protection" foundation: "Nadezhda" homeless children shelter, day activities center for disadvantaged children, and orphan housing for graduates of state orphanages. He studied foundation documents and became familiar with operation of these units. "Child Protection" foundation has no government support and all divisions are operated solely on donations. Therefore, support of Ascent foundation is vital for our survival. We hope that this campaign is very successful and thank the president of Ascent foundation, Kirill Bogouslavski, for helping homeless children and orphans in St. Petersburg. Egorycheva, S.
