I, Evgenia Altfeld and my St. Petersburg colleagues have prepared very uplifting report for you - the kind of news everyone always wants to hear about. Our first story of the day is about a man who had left behind a very prestigious career in order to devote all of his time to running a charitable fund for homeless children. Russian American, Kirill Bogouslavski, had raised funds in United States for the Russian orphans in the family commune called "Hope". Kirill: The water is hot... Thanks to that water heater, this shelter does not depend on city water supply. Reporter: First money that came from the U.S. was used to build a shower, because without the bathroom facilities the commune would not pass multiple inspection committees. Kirill had come for a very short visit to find out in person what projects urgently require funding at the Hope commune as well as in few other ones in St. Petersburg. Kirill says that helping Russian orphans has become his main mission in life. He has been living in the United States about six years now. He came to the USA to farther his education and ended up moving there permanently. Now that he is settled - he devotes all his time to running the fund for Russian orphans. Kirill: "Average American during his life time gives away or donates money every year somehow, in some way... Giving money to charity, community or other worthy causes is instilled in the American culture when in Russia it has never been cultivated as a concept. Generally, I think that if you cannot get through to a person -there is no need to keep knocking on door that is shut. People with open hearts are willing to help those who are in need, no matter who it is, and where they are". Reporter: "Twelve teenagers, who want to get off the street, drugs and criminal activity, to become functional kids and have a normal life, will soon reside in this house. This kind of attitude is the criteria for residency in the commune. For example, Artem Soplyakov, who has been living here for only five months has already developed short time goals and a plan that will get him where he wants to go in life... Artem: "I am in high school now, ninth grade and after the year is over - I want to go to the culinary school, I already now how to cook different dishes, I can cook any different kinds of soups, of course, everyone knows how to fry a potato, but I can also cook risotto, I can prepare meat." Reporter: "In general, all the residents of the commune work somewhere, some in different factories in St. Petersburg, some on the private farm of the commune in Karelia. Director of the commune, Evgeniy says:" Evgeniy: "All of the children who live and work here make me proud. All of them live and learn to contribute to the society as functional participants and good citizens, none of them had turned to crime or drugs..." Reporter: "Now Evgeniy and Kirill are discussing new project, they are talking
about raising necessary funds in United States to bring electricity to the Russian
commune farm, in Karelia. In addition, there has been promising statement issued
by administration of the district where commune is located: starting next year,
commune "Hope" will
receive funds from a St. Petersburg budget."
